Does your church talk about this?

Right now there seems to be an abundance of movies and tv shows out about spiritual beings like angels and demons.  Right off the top of my head I can think of the TV shows the Secret Circle, Supernatural, Ghost Hunters, Paranormal State, and Ghost Adventures.  There are also some recent movies like all 3 of the Paranormal Movies, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and The Devil Inside.

Honestly we are inundated with so many different view points on what happens to us when we die, what are angels really like, what are demons really like and for some reason it seems this isn’t a topic that is discussed very often in the church.  I am not sure if it is because the church doesn’t feel like it has an answer so they are afraid to approach the topic or is it because they don’t want to look like “The weirdo’s down the block” who keep talking about Spiritual Warfare when it is so much easier to preach a nice encouraging message about 5 easy steps to living a more fruitful life.  Please understand I am not saying that we should look for the Devil behind every stubbed toe or misfortune we come upon but we do need to acknowledge that Bible says there is spiritual warfare going on around us.

This Friday with our youth we will be doing a intensive Bible Study on Angels, Demons, and Spiritual Warfare based on The Secret Church by David Platt.  I am excited for the teens and myself to discover more about this issue that is all around us.  I think one of the most important things we as the church need to understand is if we don’t talk about this with those in our congregations the media will be more than glad to give them answers even if they are not the right ones.
